He earned his B.A. in Ancient and Medieval European History at Wichita State University, and minored in English Literature, later earning a JD degree. Upon being commissioned as an officer into military service, Don began a military career in the United States Air Force and later the Air National Guard [190th ARW, Topeka, KS]. He held titles such as B-52 Navigator; KC-135 Flight Test Instructor Navigator; 190th ARW, Kansas Air National Guard; Maintenance Squadron Commander; Veteran Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He retired from the military in 2004, amassing 7,500+ flying hours spanning a career of more than 32 years. After retiring in 2004, he then spent six years working as a defense contractor in Florida, Colorado, and Virginia, retiring permanently in 2010.
Don’s military career took him to many corners of the world, affording him the opportunity to explore ancient and medieval worlds which he had always dreamed of visiting. He traveled to not only many places in the United States, but throughout Europe, including Egypt, Greece, Sicily, France, Switzerland, and numerous other places. These travels enabled him to experience awe-inspiring scenes, first hand, and to record the vistas of these worlds through his photographs. Using his photographic skills, he has captured innumerable breathtaking images of faraway lands, as well as of the wild country of the American West, rich with history, including where he spent many retirement years in Wyoming. While there, he has involved with the preservation of history and the magnificent countryside as the former Vice President, and President of the Fort Phil Kearny/Bozeman Trail Association Board of Directors, the Sheridan County Historical Commission, and several other organizations. He was also a volunteer ranger at the LIttle Big Horn Battlefield National Monument, Montana.
As a scholar of history, Don has shared his vast knowledge through lectures, and his publications and writings. Along with his love of European history and the American West, he is passionate about the art of photography, which he has continued to develop over many years. He is a natural, and his photographs are pure, as shot, with no alteration. He is a purest in the strictest sense of the word, relying upon his ability to capture scenes at their most magical moments, with just the right angles, lighting, and depth of field settings to produce true-to-life, almost three dimensional images that give viewers the feeling of actually being there. Since the beginnings of his photographic journey with older, now outdated film cameras, to 35 mm film, to today’s sophisticated digital single lens reflex cameras, Don’s photographic skills have evolved through study, practice, experimentation, and experience. As technology has advanced with new camera equipment and the birth of the digital camera, his talent has expanded to become more and more enhanced.
